Hunter’s prose keeps you engaged in the fate of these characters throughout. This book was a roller coaster for me, start to finish. The same with Andrew’s attempts to deal with his rage at being unable to help. The horror elements mount as the titled Creature asserts itself more and more into their vacation.ĭescriptions of Kate’s agony throughout her battles with her diseases are often emotional punches. Finally, even an idyllic sabbatical to a summer cabin in Maine has the total opposite affect hoped for. He slowly blends in horror as the book progresses and we watch Kate and Andrew deal with all the blows they are dealt in life. Hunter gets you invested in the main characters and their relational and medical problems from the outset. Most of them are fun monster romps or freakin’ scary paranormal ghost stories. Wow! Unfortunately, Kate and Andrew are not alone. In Creature, Kate's husband takes a leave of absense from work for the summer so he and Kate can spend the season on a secluded lake in Maine. Shea does not shy away from showing you what it is like to live with a battered and failing body nor what it is like to be the spouse and caretaker of a loved one going through medical hell. The main character Kate suffers from numerous autoimmune diseases. Creature is actually a very slow burn of a novel, but I absolutely loved it.Ĭreature is a personal novel for Hunter Shea, and it shows from beginning to end. What takes place right from the beginning is amazing character development. I assumed there would be non-stop action since people were getting pulled in from the start. Creature was not at all what I was expecting.
